KENANSVILLE -- Duplin County students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will operate on a slightly different schedule in 2010-11 than students attending the county's high schools.

The Duplin Board of Education decided on the two-schedule system at its last meeting based on the recommendation of assistant superintendent James "Bo" Mullins, who said that many educators in the county were hoping for the revised schedule.

The two schedules closely mirror each other, and most holidays will remain the same for both schedules, but the nine-week schedule for younger students and the six-week schedule for high school students might help teachers and students alike, Mullins said.

Based on the calendars, there are a few days where some students will be in school on a day when others will not be attending class.

In the fall, high school students will be out of school for a teacher workday on Oct. 8 while pre-kindergarten-eighth grade students will be out of school for a teacher workday on Oct. 29. Classes for pre-k to eighth grade will end on June 8, while high school students' last day will be on June 9. Elementary and middle school students will have a teacher workday on March 25 and high school students will have a teacher workday on April 21.

All county public school students will start the 2010-11 school year on Aug. 25. The winter holiday break days of Dec. 21-31 and spring break from April 22-29 will be the same for all county students.

For elementary students, the nine-weeks grading periods will end on Oct. 28, Jan. 14, March 24 and June 8.

High school exams will take place on Jan. 11-14 and June 6-9. High school graduation for the county will be June 13. The six-week grading periods for the high schools will begin on August 25, Oct. 11, Nov. 29, Jan. 21, March 7 and May 2.

In the event of an unexpected school closure due to weather, optional make up days for elementary students will be Oct. 29, Nov. 24, March 25, April 22 and May 30. Optional make up days for high school students will be Oct. 8, Nov. 24, March 4, April 21 and May 30.
