Two Charles B. Aycock High School students recently placed third in the statewide "Hop on the Bus! High School Business Plan Competition."

Hollie Baker and Alicia Sodoma, both seniors, will be formally recognized at the N.C. Council for Economic Education award ceremony in May.

The contest is open to all high school students across the state. Thirty-seven teams submitted full business plans, which were judged by small business experts. Semi-finalists were invited to create a video presentation of their business plan to be reviewed by another panel of judges.

Students had to design a full business plan for the competition, develop an original business idea and make an oral presentation for the overall business, said Tammy Vail, adviser to the CBA team. She said their plan was for "Advantage Tennis Center," which included requesting a loan to open a tennis center in northern Wayne County. The center would include outdoor and indoor courts, a fitness gym, pro shop and snack bar.

Location, a floor plan, projected costs and income, bank loan amounts and promotional activities were all analyzed in the business plan.

Scores from the written business plan and the video portion were used to determine the top three teams.

This is the fourth year of the competition, which is sponsored by the North Carolina Council for Economic Education, the state Department of Public Instruction, North Carolina REAL Enterprise and the North Carolina Rural Center.
