A marble statue of Jesus lies on the ground in pieces at Evergreen Cemetery on U.S. 70 West after it was overturned between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, when the damage was discovered by a cemetery employee.

A large, white marble Italian-made statue of Jesus valued at $20,000 was destroyed when vandals toppled it at Evergreen Cemetery west of Goldsboro over the weekend.

The falling statue also did $8,000 damage to a nearby marble retaining wall.

The statue was located in the middle of the cemetery and was a signature monument for it. It was featured prominently on the business's Web site.

A Wayne County Sheriff's Office report shows that a cemetery employee came upon the damage just after 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Investigators said the statue was damaged sometime between Saturday evening, when it was last seen in its original condition, and Sunday morning.

The Sheriff's Office report indicated that authorities have no leads in the investigation at this point.
