A Lenoir County woman who taught at Southern Wayne High School was scheduled to appear today in Wayne County District Court to face charges of having sex with a student.
Shannon Grace Herring, 33, of Sykes Road, faces two Class G felony counts of sex offenses with a student.
The investigation began when Principal Dr. John Boldt filed a report with former school resource officer Deputy Russell Rice.
The alleged sex offenses were not described by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, which conducted the investigation and arrested Ms. Herring in March of last year.
Ms. Herring reportedly turned herself in after Detective Ron Baker made contact with her.
The Sheriff's Office said it had no reason to believe any of the alleged offenses happened on school grounds.
Detectives said the alleged sexual encounters between Ms. Herring and a 17-year-old male student took place twice between Oct. 16 and Nov. 18, 2008.
