Ten new National Board Certified teachers honored by district

Wayne County Public Schools has 10 new National Board Certified teachers.
The group of educators was recognized during Monday night's Board of Education meeting.
The accomplishment represents a lot of challenging and time-consuming work, said school board member Thelma Smith.
"The assessment process for National Board Certification requires candidates to complete two major components -- a portfolio of classroom practice including samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction, and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center," she said. "It is estimated that the process will take the better part of a school year and involve a total of 200 to 400 hours of work outside of the classroom."
Certification is granted by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
North Carolina ranks first in the U.S. for the overall number of national board certified candidates. Wayne County also maintains a high percentage of educators earning the distinction each year.
The latest group brings the WCPS total board certified teachers and counselors to 161, officials said.
Recognized were Renee Dilda, Charles B. Aycock High; Gayle Davis, Edgewood Community Developmental School; Allison Howell-Wolfe from Fremont STARS Elementary; Stephanie Metcalf and Tracy Thomas, Meadow Lane Elementary; Amy Thigpen from North Drive Elementary; Lisa Herring, Rosewood Elementary; Lindsay Barwick from Rosewood High; and Tara Murrow and Uli Shepard, both from Tommy's Road Elementary School.
Each was presented with a check for $500.
