The Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority will hold a public hearing Tuesday morning on the proposed construction of a bus transfer station.

The hearing will get under way at 10 a.m. in the anteroom on the second floor of the historic City Hall. Needed or requested route changes will be heard as well.

The authority operates the GATEWAY bus transit system.

The transfer station is proposed for the corner of Mulberry and Carolina streets adjacent to Union Station.

Illustrations of the proposed transfer station are available for inspection at the transfer station on Beech Street and at City Hall.

"It (hearing) is mainly for the public to be aware of the plans to build the transfer station at Union Station," said Alan Stubbs, authority director.

The transfer station is being considered in conjunction with the city's planned renovation of Union Station.

Stubbs said that the state Department of Transportation had wanted to save the Union Station space for trains and that is way a separate building to house the transfer station is needed.

Once completed, the Union Station project will offer rail, local bus service as well as for the Greyhound bus system.

The current transfer station is located in an old fire station building.
