Glenn Miller Orchestra to perform in Duplin

KENANSVILLE -- The famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform at the Duplin County Events Center on Friday, Feb. 12.
The group, known for decades for its swinging sound, is being sponsored by Carolina ArtsFest.
The show starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7. The events center is located just south of Kenansville on N.C. 111 across from James Sprunt Community College.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra is on the road longer and more continuously than any other in the world, covering over a hundred thousand miles a year and playing nearly 300 shows. The orchestra has performed in all fifty states, as well as throughout Europe, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Guam, the Philippines, South and Central America and Japan.
The orchestra is under the direction of Larry O'Brian, who plays the clarinet, and consists of five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, and three rhythm musicians, who play the piano, bass and drums. Plus, the Moonlight Serenaders are the vocal front for the band.
The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance bandleaders. From 1939 to 1942, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was the most popular band in the U.S., having more hit records in one year than anybody else in the history of the recording industry. The band recorded 17 top hits in 1939 and 11 each in 1941 and 1942. Miller received the first Gold Record ever awarded, honoring the 1,200,000 sales of "Chattanooga Choo Choo." The orchestra had more No. 1 hits than either Elvis Presley or the Beatles.
