Shot in calf

An East Elm Street man suffered "major" injury after being struck by a bullet while riding his bicycle on Crawford Street, police said. Miguel Phillips, 21, was treated at Wayne Memorial Hospital, according to a police report.

Widespread phone scam

Police from Wilmington and Salisbury into Goldsboro are warning of a new credit card scam, including Detective Lt. Tom Flores, who heads up the Financial Crimes Unit of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. A scammer is sending out a text message "purpor(ting) to be about the recipient's Wachovia bank card." The message asks the text recipient to call a telephone number and enter all 16 digits of the bank card in an attempt to extract the information from the customer, authorities said.

Flores offered general advice:

*"The best advice for anyone who receives a similar text message is to ignore it. Banks and credit unions do not ask customers to provide information in this manner."

*Do not provide your debit or credit card number, security code, Social Security number, address or ZIP code in response to text messages. Nor e-mails or unsolicited phone calls. Call the bank directly to ensure you are dealing with the right people.

Assault with a deadly weapon

Police reported that Lonnie Lee Garner, 21, of Old Mount Olive Highway in Dudley was shot in the shoulder by an unknown male subject while he was walking in the 700 block of Maple Street Friday night. Garner was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Further investigation is pending. Police also reported that Eric Thomas, 46, of Benton Street was shot in the shoulder, allegedly during an argument with a known subject. Police arrived at the 1100 block of Lemon Street and found Thomas arguing with a subject. Police reported that Thomas was holding the weapon and that he said that he took it from the subject. Thomas was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment, and signed a non-prosecution form. The weapon was taken into evidence.
