Widespread phone scam
Police from Wilmington and Salisbury into Goldsboro are warning of a new credit card scam, including Detective Lt. Tom Flores, who heads up the Financial Crimes Unit of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. A scammer is sending out a text message "purpor(ting) to be about the recipient's Wachovia bank card." The message asks the text recipient to call a telephone number and enter all 16 digits of the bank card in an attempt to extract the information from the customer, authorities said.
Flores offered general advice:
*"The best advice for anyone who receives a similar text message is to ignore it. Banks and credit unions do not ask customers to provide information in this manner."
*Do not provide your debit or credit card number, security code, Social Security number, address or ZIP code in response to text messages. Nor e-mails or unsolicited phone calls. Call the bank directly to ensure you are dealing with the right people.
