Residents who have business with the offices in the Wayne County Courthouse might want to check the number before they call.
Numbers at the courthouse were changed just prior to Christmas as part of the state's plans to install a new telephone system.
The new numbers are:
* Clerk of Court: 722-6100
* District Attorney: 722-6200
* District Court judges: 722-6250
* Superior Court judges: 722-6280
* Magistrates (civil): 722-6271
* Magistrates (criminal): 722-6270.
More changes are in store the system. Depending on funding, installation could begin this month to install a new VoIP (voice over IP) telephone system.
Superior Court Judge Arnold Jones has said that in the past the court offices received calls from the public for other agencies, such as probation, parole or even the water office.
The new system will allow court staff to redirect those calls efficiently, he said in an earlier interview.
The numbers aren't the only changes for the court offices.
In August, the county's planning and inspections departments moved to the Jeffreys Building on John Street, freeing up roughly 3,000 square feet on the third floor of the county courthouse annex.
That space is being used by the clerk of court, district attorney and district court judges. The estates division of the clerk of court's office has relocated to the third floor, too.
It is the first time that the district court staff has been together in a central location. The move was touted as making communication easier among judges.
