A long-awaited re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Goldsborough Bridge planned for this weekend has been canceled.
Organizers said they hope to be able to reschedule the event for early next year but that recent rains have left the battlefield site on the Neuse River a quagmire.
Even the high ground is so wet that walkers sink ankle-deep in the mud, Randy Sauls of the Goldsborough Battlefield Association said Wednesday afternoon after going over the site off Old Mount Olive Highway.
The re-enactment was planned to re-create the battle fought in December 1862 in which Union forces tried to destroy the railroad bridge over the Neuse River.
