Area students show aptitude for math

Wayne Early/Middle College High School tallied the winning total to win this year's county math contest, held at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair on Oct. 1.
Using pencils and calculators, the team of Matthew Forster and Walker Smiley amassed the highest score on the nine short-answer tests. Seven teams from Wayne County Public Schools competed in the 40-minute exercise.
This is the 21st year Wayne Community College has hosted the contest, co-sponsoring it with the school district and the fair. WCC math instructors Katina Davis and Michael Dubrowsky administered and scored the test and awarded ribbons and monetary prizes, provided by the college's Foundation as well as the fair.
The WEMCH team received $220 for first place, with the following earning remaining spots.
Charles B. Aycock High School's Joanne Choi and Courtney Sheeks came in second, receiving $115. Kylie Glisson and Marieke Parrish, representing Rosewood High School, were in third place, receiving a $60 award.
Wayne School of Engineering's Cameron Armbrester and James Crowe, were given the fourth place prize of $30. Fifth place went to Jake Bridgers and Jennifer Jackson of Eastern Wayne High. They received a ribbon, but no monetary award.
Shannon Harless and Yassine Oaddi from Southern Wayne High School, Norma Valentin and Elizabeth Price from Spring Creek High School and Savalius Swain and Charnise Taylor from Goldsboro High School also participated.
