A dozen teams are already getting their recipes ready for the Community Soup Kitchen's Third Annual Real Chili Challenge set for Oct. 24.

With little more than a week left until the Oct. 16 deadline for entry, organizers say they are still looking for teams to take part in the event.

Meanwhile, entry forms and the $75 cooking team fees are being received, judges are being selected, entertainers are rehearsing, prizes are being gathered, booth decors are being prepared and the weather is cooling down, making it just right for a bowl of hot chili, said Soup Kitchen cabinet member Ann Hunter.

Teams interested in participating can visit www.communitysoup kitchen.org for instructions or call Andrea Heekin at (252) 943-1010 with questions. Entry forms and rules are also available at The Health Habit.

The organization is also hosting a "2 Hot 2 Trot" 5-kilometer road run at 11 a.m. on Oct. 24. Runners can pre-register online at www.communitysoup kitchen.org up until Oct. 19, from 6 until 8 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Flying Shamrock or at the Center Street Jam site prior to the race. The fee for runners is $25 and includes admission to the chili tasting and an official event visor.

"We are expecting from 70 to 100 racers to participate," Mrs. Hunter said.

Prizes for the runners and chili cooking teams will be awarded at 2 p.m. that day.

Members of the public can attend the chili cookoff and sample the chili beginning at 11:30 a.m. Admission for adults is $5 and $3 for children.

"The public can (come) and taste all the chili entries, enjoy the cold drinks, check out the new 2009 official Chili Challenge T-shirts, visors and aprons, and see some of the best entertainment Goldsboro has to offer," Mrs. Hunter said. "So get your game face on, your taste buds ready, your running shoes laced and join the fun to benefit the Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro."
