Beginning next week, the Wayne County Health Department will be providing annual seasonal flu vaccine to those at high risk.

Residents 19 and older will be seen by appointment only, officials said.

At this point, only the seasonal flu vaccine will be given. The H1N1 vaccines are expected to be received later in the month.

From Oct. 6 to 20, vaccines will be distributed to those at risk for complications from the flu as well as those with chronic illnesses -- diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver and lung diseases, including asthma or anyone immune compromised.

A mass flu clinic for the general public is being planned for a later date.

Medicaid and Medicare will cover the cost of the shot for anyone in those programs. Individuals are requested to bring their card with them.

Those with other forms of insurance such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield will be asked to pay for the cost of the flu shot, which is $25. Cost of the pneumonia shot is $45 for those without insurance coverage or not meeting other eligibility criteria.

To make an appointment, call 731-1000. Health Department hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. It is closed on Fridays.
