The northbound lane of I-795 will be closed three nights this month while workers set in place the girders for the U.S. 70 bypass construction.

The lane will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. the nights of Sept. 28-30, and possibly the night of Oct. 1 if the work takes an extra day, engineer Benny Woodard said.

The girders are so large that they would pose a threat to drivers passing by as they are set into place. The closure is a safety measure, Woodard said.

A detour route around the closure will run from U.S. 70 West beginning at the on-ramp near the Bojangles in Goldsboro and send drivers to N.C. 581, then direct traffic down N.C. State Road 1002 and back into Pikeville.

Workers will be focusing on the Stoney Hill Road and Belfast Road areas, Wood-ward said.

The northbound land of I-795 will be closed the entire distance between Goldsboro and Pikeville.
