PIKEVILLE -- Pikeville residents will soon see an end to some of their street woes.

Tyndall Lewis, of McDavid Associates, told the town board on Tuesday night that the town's sewer project should be finished next month.

"Really, in the next 30 days we should wind up this project," he said. "Now that's assuming it doesn't rain."

The project officially started on March 21 and replaced about 7,000 feet of sewer lines.

"The sewer lines were about 75 years old. They were deteriorating and subject to excessive deterioration where ground water was getting into the sewer system," Lewis explained.

Initially, streets that were damaged because of the project were going to be repatched, but the board approved an additional $37,000 so the street that we worked on can be repaved, according to Mayor Herb Sieger.

Also at the meeting, commissioners determined that golf carts will be allowed to be driven in town starting Oct. 1. The carts must remain on streets that are 35 miles per hour or less. The carts must also be registered annually for $5 and inspected by the Pikeville Police Department.

In other business, the board discussed the "Summer Blast in the Park," that will be held on Saturday.

The event will include children's games for 25 cents and free prizes, a clown painting faces and making balloon characters, a karate demonstration, a couples contest to win a candlelight dinner and a silent auction.

The festivities start at 5 p.m. with fireworks after sundown. There will also be hot dogs, chips and drinks for sale and Town Clerk Michelle Singleton will be set up in a dunking booth.

"It's three balls for a dollar. Now is their chance to take out all their aggression," Singleton said, laughing. "It's for a good cause. We're trying to beautify the park area. This money is going back into the town."

The fall clean up day is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1. Cans with chemicals and paints will not be accepted.
