It's time to break out the running shoes and chili recipes.

The Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro is gearing up for its annual Really Chili Challenge and 2 Hot 2 Trot 5K Road Run on Oct. 24.

Runners and cooking teams can begin signing up for the event with a $25 entry fee for the run and $75 team entry fee for the cook-off. Entry forms and information are available at www.comm unitysoupkitchen.org.

Ann Hunter, Soup Kitchen board member and publicity chairwoman for the event, said the organization is looking to raise money and awareness about the Soup Kitchen.

"It's a good thing to help your neighbor, especially someone who's really in distress. It's a cheap way and an inexpensive way to have a wonderful time and do something good," she said. "I think that people in Goldsboro really have a heart for the Soup Kitchen and so many people work there as volunteers. I think some people realize that it's just by the grace of God it isn't them, and it is something that is very close to home."

Mrs. Hunter said volunteers currently have three sponsors for the event, but are looking for more. They are also looking for volunteers to work that day.

This marks the third year for the chili cook-off and the second year for the 5K run. The team entry fee for the cook-off was raised from $50 to $75 due to increased expenses at the Soup Kitchen. Mrs. Hunter said the kitchen now serves about 150 meals every day, an all-time high.

The deadline to sign up for the event is Oct. 16. The run begins at 11 a.m. and the cook-off is from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the public can come try the chili from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center Street Jam parking lot. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call 252-943-1010.
