Couple convicted in rapes of hitchhikers

A Goldsboro couple accused of bringing two hitchhikers home from Greensboro to sexually assault them in 2007 pleaded guilty to lesser offenses on Monday in Wayne County Superior Court.
Charles Broadie, 46, and Juliet Broadie, of 280 Lee St., were accused of first-degree rape and first-degree kidnapping among other offenses.
Charles Broadie pleaded no contest to solicitation of second-degree rape after a plea deal with prosecutors. He will serve a 37- to 54-month sentence in prison for the offense.
Juliet Broadie pleaded guilty to two counts of crimes against nature, and will serve a three-year probation term. If she were to violate the terms of her probation, a 16- to 20-month prison term could be imposed.
Goldsboro police Investigator Paige Learnard said her investigation began with Charles Broadie.
After she received complaints about the kidnapping and sexual assault of the hitchhikers, Mrs. Learnard said her investigation led her to Charles Broadie and quickly to his wife, whom she said was an accomplice in the crimes.
Mrs. Learnard said she learned that after the Broadies kidnapped and sexually assaulted the hitchhikers, they took them from Goldsboro to an unnamed town in Virginia, where the victims sought help.
Mrs. Learnard then discovered that Broadie had been designated a violent sexual offender after a similar case was brought to trial in 1991, she said.
Mrs. Learnard said she also learned of another assault in 2006, in which she alleged both Juliet and Charles Broadie were involved, and which led to some of the charges against them.
