Saturday's benefit to raise money for accident victim Lisa Mozingo and her family brought in more than $50,000.
Mozingo, 18, was injured after being ejected from her car on May 19 when it overturned. Christy Shivar, who helped organize the multi-location benefit, said the community has "been wonderful."
"Our goal was to do as much as we possibly could," she said. "Everyone's excited, everybody's happy. I'm very proud and very thankful that we raised that much especially during tough economic times."
While the $50,000 will have an impact on medical and home renovation expenses, Shivar said the family still has a long way to go.
"They have a lot of stuff that has to be done to the house," she said. "The house has been there for 20-some years. When it was built it was perfect for what they had and perfect for what they needed, but it is not handicap-accessible at all."
People still interested in donating to the Mozingo family can send money to Zion United Methodist Church, 1727 Zion Church Road, Mount Olive, NC, 28365.
Shivar added that she is thankful to the communities of Wayne, Duplin and Lenoir counties and to the locations and organizations that also helped with the benefit, including the Pricetown Fire Department, the Seven Springs Fire Department, the Albertson Fire Department, Garris Chapel United Methodist Church and Mount Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church.
