Alvin Bullock picks several rows of butter beans at the First African Baptist Church on Harris Street in Goldsboro early this morning. Bullock began the garden three years ago. Today it encompasses about 2.5 acres and also includes string beans, squash, zucchini, corn and collards. The garden's main mission is to help provide food to the church's elderly members, as well as to those in need through the church's relief ministry. About half of the plot also is used by the Dillard Academy Charter School on Elm Street as part of its agricultural program, giving students the opportunity to grow, eat and sell their own produce.
