Selflessness: Times of crisis prove the strength in unity

We have received quite a response on the story we ran about the community-minded group behind the Blessing Boxes popping up around Goldsboro.

Stories like these remind us of how truly caring we are as neighbors in this community -- from the Empty Stocking Fund and United Way campaigns, to Meals on Wheels and the Community Soup Kitchen. There is no shortage of kind-hearted acts taking place regularly in Wayne County.

It has also seemed recently that an increase in the number of house fires has gone on, and we have seen time and time again that not only the American Red Cross, but neighbors and strangers alike have also opened up their hearts -- and closets -- to donate clothes, blankets, toiletries, canned food items and more to the people who have lost such items to catastrophe.

The firefighters, both paid and volunteer, the EMS workers and the Red Cross are all to be commended as well. These are some tireless and selfless individuals who come together in crises and, to the extent that they are able, work to save the day at people's lowest and darkest hours.

It is very easy to be divisive, especially given today's political climate, but it is just as easy to forgo all that divides us when something powerful unites us. We would do well, and we believe most of us do, to remember these things in between the hardships brought on by life's daily challenges.
