Ticket to ride: In gratitude, bus system offers a lift to military, veterans

Sometimes we discover a nice thing being done with no strings attached and have to collectively shake free the cobwebs of cynicism in our heads.

It's the old "there are selfless people left in the world, after all" phenomenon that throws us all for a loop once in a while.

And, while that may say more about us as a society than it does the sum of mankind, it is still a refreshing realization to come to.

The good folks at the Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority have seen fit to bring back a program for a second year where veterans and active duty military, in the first part of November, can ride area buses free of charge.

There is no grand display, no recruiting effort at work behind the scenes. It is simply a measure of gratitude extended to those who serve and have served their country.

We are a community comprised largely of military families and veterans, and the support of their efforts and sacrifices is evidenced daily in and around Wayne County.

This program -- it runs during regular business hours between Nov. 6 and Veterans Day, Nov. 11 -- is called Veterans Ride Free week, and it's just one more example of the close-knit and enduring relationship between this community and the military.
