Young hero: Private Dan Bullock finally getting recognition he deserves

Marine Pvt. Dan Bullock was a real American hero.

The Goldsboro youth was the youngest American killed in combat in the Vietnam War.

He was only 15, having lied about his age in order to enlist. He was killed when he volunteered to run to get ammunition for his comrades under enemy fire.

A street will be dedicated in his name at the entrance to Elmwood Cemetery, where he his buried, later this month.

Marine chaplain Bill Boyd, who was instrumental in getting the sign erected, is hoping members of Bullock's family attend the May 27 ceremony at 2 p.m. We hope they learn of the honor being paid their kinsman and are able to make it.

The teenager was someone that Goldsboro should be forever proud of. He represents the best we have to offer -- young, brave, selfless. He deserves to be remembered. By us all.
