Jobs program: Hundreds of teenagers turn out to look for summer jobs

Who says young people don't want to work?

More than 300 teenagers applied for about 50 summer jobs offered recently through the city of Goldsboro.

The new Goldsboro Summer Youth Employment program is designed to give local youths a chance at gainful employment and to help them learn about the working world.

It is a good program and has attracted the attention of hundreds of young people, all eager to find real work.

Sometimes, we adults tend to look at the younger generation as being slack, not having the work ethic we claim to have had instilled in ourselves at an early age.

But that is a stereotype that we should avoid. There are plenty of young people in this community who want to work and get their careers started. Talented and ambitious, they are the workforce of the future, and we should do all we can to encourage them.

The city's youth employment program is a fine step in that direction, and those who came up with the idea should be proud of the interest it has sparked.
