Honor Bullock: City should erect sign in youngest Marine's memory

Marine Corps Private Dan Bullock, a native of Goldsboro, was the youngest American to die in combat in the Vietnam War. At 15, he had lied about his age on his enlistment form in order to join up.

Marine Corps Chaplain Bill Boyd wants to have Bullock recognized with a street sign here. Boyd sees something of his own life in Bullock's story and has taken up Bullock's cause out of that recognition.

But Boyd has run into bureaucratic problems in his quest, and although he has the sign in hand, it doesn't mark any street in the city.

Bullock is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Boyd hopes to have the sign placed somewhere near there.

We hope the City Council can do something to see to it that Bullock's sign is erected in a prominent place in the city. H.V. Brown Park is nearby and would seem a good place to put up some kind of historical marker, if not a street sign.

It seems only right that Goldsboro in some way publicly honor the life of this young man who gave his life for his country. He is one of Goldsboro's true heroes and deserves no less.
