Blood needed: Holiday season means demand for blood increases

With cold temperatures and harsh weather outside taking over during the busy holiday season, few people are thinking of the continued need for donations of blood.

Many people are traveling to celebrate the season, and thoughts of donating blood are simply not on their minds. Others have seasonal illnesses that prevent them from donating blood.

But the demand for blood never goes away, and the need for donations is never greater than at this time of year, when the number of people on the highways means more accidents and more people injured.

While most of us are enjoying the coming new year, there are many who will ring in 2017 from a hospital bed. Don't forget them. The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to get out and give blood this winter. We urge you to stop and take the time to give blood. During this season of giving, it is the one gift that can save lives.

The Red Cross is holding a blood drive Jan. 10 from 1:20 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Red Cross building at 600 N. George St. We hope to see you there.
