Governor's race: In tight contest, McCrory is right to seek a recount

There are a lot of folks, mostly Democrats, who are criticizing Gov. Pat McCrory's efforts to make sure every vote in the recent governor's election is properly counted before conceding defeat.

McCrory, on the surface, has lost the election by a few thousand votes to Attorney General Roy Cooper. Cooper has publicly called on McCrory to give up the fight and admit he has lost.

We believe McCrory is right to contest the election as long as there remain questions about balloting in some counties. And we are convinced Cooper would do the same if the situation was reversed.

The NAACP is one group that has called on McCrory to give up the ghost, saying the Republican is playing games. That comes as no surprise since the organization backed Cooper in the race.

But McCrory is doing nothing but ensuring every avenue that might bring about victory is being explored, and we don't blame him for that.

Cooper may well be our next governor, but in such a close race we'd like to know for sure that all the ballots have been properly counted before we hand him the keys to the governor's mansion.
