It's McCrory: The News-Argus endorses Republican for governor

North Carolina's race for the governor's mansion is said to be one of the closest, and most closely watched, in the nation. It pits incumbent Republican Pat McCrory against Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper.

The News-Argus endorses McCrory for another term in office.

McCrory, in our opinion, has done a good job in his first four years. He has led the way in balancing competing priorities in the state budget and managed to build up a substantial rainy day fund in the meantime.

We believe he is in tune with the majority of North Carolina voters and understands what the citizenry of this state wants in a leader. We'd like to see what he does given four more years.

Cooper is an astute politician. He has been eyeing the governor's job for years. But we do not believe this is the time to make a change.

Cooper chose not to defend the state law that limits a transgender  person to using the public restroom of his or her anatomical gender. We believe that it was, and is, his duty as the state's chief lawyer, to defend all of the state's laws, whether he personally agrees with them or not. That is what lawyers do. The issue is far from the most important one to consider when voting for governor. But it tells us that Cooper is too liberal for our tastes.
