Play it safe: Heed the warnings, hurricane is still a threat

Weather experts are telling us that Hurricane Matthew is going to turn out to sea without doing serious damage to eastern North Carolina.

Don't bet your life on it.

The storm -- an enormously powerful one -- could still defy the meteorologists and make a beeline for the area, with possible devastating results.

So hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Mostly, follow the warnings of public safety officials and stay out of harm's way as much as possible.

Matthew should turn out to be a rain event for Wayne and surrounding counties. But even that can be deadly. Above all, don't trust highway conditions, and don't drive through standing water. That is a recipe for disaster.

As of this writing, there is already water collecting on roadways around the county. Play it safe and avoid them. That will be true for the next several days as water makes its way downstream.

And also, if your Sunday News-Argus is a few hours late, please understand that we are waiting for the storm to subside before having our carriers deliver their papers that morning, hopefully without incident. Safety is our foremost concern. We hope it is yours, too.
