City bonds: Voters should approve a $10 million bond referendum

Goldsboro voters will be asked in November to support a $10 million bond referendum that the city council approved this week to help pay for street paving and a new sports complex near Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

We hope the bonds are approved.

Part of the money borrowed through the sale of the bonds would help pay for the complex, which is planned to be a 62-acre multi-sports facility off Oak Forest Road. The facility is expected to do more than just give local youth and adults a place to play. It is expected to draw regional tournaments that will bring in hundreds of visitors to the city each year. Those visitors will occupy motel rooms and eat at local restaurants, boosting the city economy.

The bonds also will help pay for street paving and resurfacing, something that is always a pressing need. The city spends nearly a half million dollars annually on street repairs, but that isn't enough to keep up with the demand. The money from the sale of the bonds should help greatly in that effort.

The bond referendum is a good idea and deserves the support of the voters.
