Ready to Relay? Annual fundraiser has become a Wayne County tradition

The annual Relay for Life is coming up this Friday and Saturday, and organizers are hoping for good weather and a good turnout.

Over the years, the event has become one of Wayne County's largest gatherings and certainly one of its largest, if not the largest, fundraising events.

The money generated goes to the American Cancer Society for research into ways to prevent and cure the deadly disease. Almost everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer, which is the main reason the event has done so well.

Hundreds of volunteers annually take to the Wayne County Fairgrounds for the festivities, which puts a bright face on a serious subject. They are to be congratulated for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been raised through their efforts. Wayne County can be proud of its Relay, which is one of the biggest and most successful in the state and nation. Last year, more than $250,000 was raised, and this year organizers are hoping to top that with at least $285,000.

So get ready. It's time to Relay again.
