Golden State: California near the end of a long primary road

The primary season is nearing its end, and the golden prize awaits -- delegate-rich California.

California has long been a study in contrasts: on one hand a stronghold of liberal sentiment, on the other a bastion of conservatism that brought forth Ronald Reagan.

In the Republican primary, which will be held June 7, Donald Trump has already picked up the support of many right-wing enthusiasts. But he also faces many moderates who opposed his candidacy.

Coming so late in the primary schedule, California is usually a low-profile event, taking place after the nomination has been secured.

But this could be the rare occasion when the Golden State determines who gets the nomination. Trump is nearing the magic number of delegates needed to avoid a convention battle, and California has 53 congressional districts, which would go a long way toward making Trump the golden boy he has come to be in the eyes of many.
