The Big Apple: Voters in New York will go a long way toward determining nominees

Millions of New Yorkers will go to the polls today in the state's hugely important primary for president.

On the Republican side, Donald Trump should emerge as the easy winner, picking up plenty of delegates to help him in his drive for the GOP nomination. He needs every one he can get if he wants to wrap up the nomination before the convention. It would be a major upset if Trump does not trounce Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich in his own home state. Especially since Cruz inadvertently disparaged New York politicians earlier in the campaign by saying Trump exemplifies New York values, meaning liberal ones.

The Democratic contest is more muddled, with former New York senator Hillary Clinton and New York native Bernie Sanders battling for delegates. Clinton appears to have the edge, but Sanders has developed a habit of clinging closely to the frontrunning former first lady.

This is one primary to watch.
