Obey the sign: Speed limits aren't just suggestions; don't find out the hard way

Law enforcement officials across the state are warning drivers to "Obey the sign or pay the fine."

And they mean it.

The Governor's Highway Safety Program this week began cracking down on speeders, hard. You know the cushion you are used to having on the highway, doing 60 miles per hour or maybe even 62 miles per hour in a 55 miles-per-hour zone? It's gone.

And the new policy goes for streets and side roads as well as the main highways.

No longer can you expect a trooper or policeman to "give" you the benefit of the doubt. If you are going 58 miles per hour in a 55-miles-per-hour zone, you can expect a ticket and the fine that goes along with it. Officers will be given some leeway, officials said, but not much.

The measure might seem draconian to people who are used to that cushion, but speed kills, as we all know, and authorities have decided to get tough in order to make the roads safer.
