Common sense: Restroom issue isn't complicated, ought to be resolved quickly

The General Assembly will convene on Wednesday to consider legislation that would, if approved, override a Charlotte ordinance which would allow people to use a public restroom in that city that coincides with their gender identity.

We think it is only common sense.

The new law was intended to give people the right to use the restroom that aligns with their sexual identity. Men who identify themselves as women would legally be able to enter a women's restroom, and vice versa.

We believe that is wrong.

Apparently, so do many other North Carolinians, who have put pressure on their legislators to call a special session to stop the new regulations from taking effect.

We understand that the purpose of the law is to prevent discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. That is an admirable goal. But this is taking it too far. People have the right to expect others using the same restroom to have the same anatomy.
