Why wait? Every day, not just Nov. 11, should be Veterans Day

In just more than two weeks, Wayne County and the nation will pause to honor the men and women who have sacrificed for our country -- and those who currently put on a uniform every day.

But why should we wait for Nov. 11?

One of our county's greatest strengths is that we recognize our servicemen and women nearly every time we get the chance.

We do it by paying for a meal or cup of coffee.

We do it with a simple, "Thank you for your service."

And we do it by volunteering to help -- and delivering meals and companionship to -- those who manned their post decades ago, the retirees and veterans who would pick up a gun today if their bodies would allow them to.

So let's make a vow this year.

Let's continue to do the right thing when nobody is looking -- and buck the trend of spending just one day showing our gratitude for the freedoms they fought so hard to preserve.
