Speak up: Superintendent is asking for input; now's time to give it

If there is one topic that gets people's opinions flowing, it is the schools.

Whether it is federally mandated programs, testing, teachers' salaries or the quality of the education provided at their neighborhood school, the public is not shy about sharing its feelings.

And lucky for those in Wayne County who have something to say about the schools, the county's new superintendent, Dr. Michael Dunsmore, wants to hear just exactly what you think.

The superintendent is holding a series of meetings across the county to allow people from all areas of the district the chance to share what they think the top priorities should be for Wayne County Public Schools.

The information he gathers will help create a roadmap of sorts for the next few years -- with priorities not only from the educators themselves but from the community as well.

Bottom line is that the new superintendent gets that you have a stake in your community's schools and he wants to hear what you think.

Refreshing, huh?

Everyone acknowledges that there is work to be done in the county schools -- and that there might be a little shakeup as those new priorities take hold.

It is a very positive sign that the county's new superintendent is not only proactively mobilizing his county office staff to start that transition, but that he is listening to the true stakeholders -- the parents and students -- as well.

Combine that with some honest evaluation from the people in the trenches -- the staff, administrators and teachers -- and we might just be on the path to much better schools for Wayne County children.

But it all starts with you. Get involved -- this chance to talk directly to the boss is one you should not pass up.
