Fumble: Tom Brady blows a chance to show some integrity

So what do you think about Tom Brady?

It is not a weighty concern considering there is so much else to worry about in today's world.

But there is a bigger issue.

This is not just about deflated footballs.

It is about transparency. It is about integrity and it is about what should happen when there is an accusation of less-than-honorable dealings.

This is not really about whether or not the New England Patriots cheat.

It is about how a star quarterback when faced with a question about how he conducted business, or how those around him conducted business, clammed up.

And then, when he was asked about text messages he might have sent before the game, deliberately destroyed his phone.

His right -- to protect his privacy, maybe.

Suspicious and a bit distasteful -- yes.

The NFL's decision to suspend Brady is one that has garnered a lot of attention -- and criticism. The problem, the severity of the punishment considering the fact that more distasteful and despicable offenses have earned a lot less.

But here is an argument for, if not this suspension, another one -- this is about integrity.

There was an opportunity here, to stand up and be forthright, to accept some accountability if there was any and to talk about honest play and gamesmanship in sports.

No big revelation, really, but the chance to model the behavior for young athletes everywhere.

Bottom line -- be a standup guy and an honorable team.

Tom Brady's dilemma is not really about being suspended. And it is not about the money either. He can afford to lose a few games.

It is about the cover-up and the perception that there was something to hide.

It will be interesting to see if he ever gets that.
