More lives lost: Louisiana shooting adds another sad statistic

It used to shock us -- almost make the country stand still -- when we learned about a heinous act like the shooting in Louisiana.

We would pause and mourn the loss of the innocent lives and think about how something like this should not have happened here.

And we still do mourn those lost and wonder what the world is coming to every time we hear of something like what happened last evening.

But what is striking about this latest round of bad news is something that has nothing to do with the crime itself.

It is about how many times we have had to think about incidents like this over the last few years.

Remember when Columbine High School was the worst we had ever seen? Who would have thought there would have been so many incidents since then that we could not count them all -- or recount all the details of the events?

Try to make a list -- it will make you sad. And this year, we can add an act of violence at a college in our own community to that list.

If we knew the solution, we would share it.

Until then, we will just sit back like the rest of you and wonder what the world is coming to -- and pray for the families of all the victims of violence this year.

It is not enough, but it will have to do for now.
