Safety course: It only takes one slip to have holiday end in tragedy

There is a reason that there are rules about fireworks -- and why those who see the results of bad behavior say that following those rules is essential.

It only takes a minute, or one stray spark, to change someone's life forever.

Perhaps it is a house or grass fire caused by a firework gone wrong. Or maybe it is a child facing the loss of a limb because he or she played with an illegal item.

The bottom line is the moment of fun and the thrill of the danger are not worth the risk.

Rescue workers can tell you. Most of the people they see thought it would never happen to them. They thought all those stories about fireworks accidents were just about other people.

And now they live with the consequences.

Celebrate the nation's birthday all you want. Enjoy a swim or time with family and friends.

But leave the fireworks to the professionals.

That is way to have a safe Fourth of July.
