Helping hands: There are stories like this all over county every day

What happened to A.J. Underwood and his girlfriend Kayla King is not supposed to be part of the story of two barely 20-year-olds.

They were supposed to be planning a new life together and doing the things young people do.

Instead, they, along with A.J.'s mother, Jody Mitchell, are waging a battle as A.J. recovers from severe injuries from a crash.

And they will make it. You can tell by how far they have come already -- in just a few weeks.

But what is extraordinary about this story is how much has been done for the couple -- and how grateful they are.

Kayla's employer, Logan's Roadhouse, did not have to help out the waitress who had been working there only a couple of weeks.

But the staff and management did -- and are.

A.J.'s employer, DLT Construction, did not have to hold his job, and his boss did not have to help Kayla look for A.J.'s wallet along the road.

But he did.

And there are many, many others who did not have to offer support, prayer and donations to assist these young people.

But they did.

And there is no telling how much such kindness has changed their lives at a time when the going must be very, very hard.

We talk a lot these days about selfishness, people who do not care and how the private sector needs to step up when there is a crisis.

And we hear a lot of bad news every day.

But today we heard an inspiring story -- one that should remind us all just how many good people there are in the world.

And we have proven once again that in this county -- we take care of our own.

And that is something of which we should be very proud.
