To the rescue: Volunteers brave ice, cold to bring meals to homebound seniors

While many people were huddled up in their homes or complaining about the temperatures as they sat at their desks at work, a troop of volunteers was revving up its engines.

The volunteers with the Meals on Wheels program might have missed two delivery days, but they were not going to miss three.

So because they steeled themselves against the cold and the ice, hundreds of local seniors got meals and a friendly visit Thursday.

It is not surprising that these volunteers kept their word -- the seniors they serve are more than just stops on a route. They worry and care about them.

So while the ice might have stopped some of us -- it did not stop them.

And that is why they deserve a tip of the hat -- and a scarf -- today.
