Sad news: Family's confirmation of their daughter's loss heartbreaking

It is bad enough when a terrorist group murders a captured pilot in such a horrible way.

But what is equally unforgivable -- and a sign of complete depravity -- is when an innocent person only in the country to help the people is executed or kidnapped.

And that is the story of Kayla Mueller. She was in the Middle East to help people -- serving as an aid worker.

She was not a politician or a combatant. She was someone who dedicated her life to the service of others.

And she paid for it with her life.

Her story and those of the other aid workers -- from the U.S. and elsewhere -- who have faced the wrath of ISIS is motivation enough for the rest of the world to step up.

A group that could so viciously take the life of an innocent is not worthy of deference or respect.

And we should remember that as we move forward.
