Our star: We are proud to call Phyllis Moore one of our own

Please forgive us while we brag a little.

And, please, don't tell her -- she would not want any of what happened at the Relay for Life Kickoff Banquet Thursday night to be about her.

In fact, she would insist that the focus be on the other people who shared their stories about battling cancer.

That is just the kind of person she is.

So, that is why we decided to go ahead and say what we had to say where she would have to look for it. (We are all a little afraid of her, too, we guess.)

For those of you who heard her speech last night, you probably know now that Phyllis is one of three Relay for Life co-chairpersons for this year's event.

And we could not be prouder.

But neither that honor -- nor her battle with cancer -- are why we are taking a moment to mention her today.

It is because of the kind of person she is.

Phyllis has vowed that she will use her story "for good," and she has done just that since Day 1. We could share all sorts of stories about how she has inspired us -- and others -- and how much she has taught us about the kind of people we want to be.

And we are not alone. She has friends and admirers all over the county.

But here at the News-Argus, we feel especially fortunate. We have been lucky to know for years what the rest of the county is finding out -- that courage and inspiration sometimes come in zany, kind, sweet, clever and compassionate packages.

So today we let her know how proud we are of her and that her "team" remains steadfastly behind her -- today and forever.
