Buying power: Shoppers determine if local businesses -- and so, too, community -- thrive

There are hidden treasures right under your nose.

As the Christmas shopping season officially starts today, what might be on your mind -- and on your list -- are the names of the stores that you see on the national ads every year.

But there are other places to find the perfect gift for that special person on your Christmas list -- and it will not cost you a lot in gas to get there.

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday -- a national campaign designed to get shoppers to think locally -- and to do business with local merchants.

By doing so, they not only find unique gifts and special items to put under the tree, they also support their community's bottom line.

What most people do not remember is that the local businesses in Wayne County are the ones who do most of the hiring. Money you spend there comes back in the form of tax revenue, investment and jobs.

And don't forget that these local merchants are also the first to donate services, products, manpower and dollars when there is a need in this community.

They are your neighbors. And they deserve a chance to show you just what they have to offer.

Some of the local businesses in Goldsboro have been around for decades, while others are just taking their first steps.

They offer all sorts of choices, styles and gift ideas you might not have even considered.

So instead of buying your mother the same old scarf, take a look at one of the local gift shops and find that special memento that she will treasure.

Want to save yourself some time this holiday season? Consider hiring a local restaurant to do some of the cooking. Many of them offer holiday meal packages or takeout to get you through that holiday rush.

And don't forget that local merchants pride themselves on the service they offer.

Take advantage of their expertise -- you might find that you get a better product, better service and a real bargain, right here at home.

The patronizing of small businesses is the lifeblood of any local economy. Most jobs are created by small businesses and they, in return, are the ones who give back most to the community.

There are dozens of places in and around Goldsboro to shop, so as you prepare your list and check it twice this holiday season, think about checking with small local merchants first.

They just might have that special Christmas gift you've been looking for. And you'd be doing yourself -- and the local economy -- a favor at the same time.
