Full hearts: Help us ensure fewer stockings are empty this Christmas

Most of us have a memory of a Christmas morning that seemed perfect.

Perhaps, that year, the tree was glistening like it never had before.

Or maybe, Santa left a trace that proved he was real -- the gift you wanted that only he knew about was waiting for you by the fireplace; the milk and cookies you left out the night before were gone and a thank you note was left in their place.

For parents, that perfect Christmas might have been the year your child was finally old enough to light up with wonder when he or she stood in front of all those gifts and a full stocking -- wondering, all the while, just how Santa and his elves pulled it off.

But some Wayne County residents do not have a memory like that.

Some parents simply do not have the means to provide that perfect Christmas for their children.

And, as a result, many children will never know the joy that comes with a holiday that has created so many coveted memories.

But we can do something to change all that.

Together.

The News-Argus' annual Empty Stocking Fund party is, for many children who attend it, that perfect Christmas morning.

Santa is there with a cadre of "elves."

Carols are sung.

Toys -- and stockings -- are there for the taking.

But it can't happen without your support.

So when you ask yourself whether to, again, donate to the ESF, remember that Christmas morning that took your breath away.

This just might be your chance to be a part of providing one.

Keeping in line with tradition, the News-Argus will publish the names of those who donate to the Empty Stocking Fund.

Maybe your donation will be in memory of a loved one lost -- someone who helped make your perfect Christmas a reality.

Or perhaps, you will use your gift to teach your child -- or grandchild -- what the season is all about.

Whatever you decide, we will honor your request.

And we vow, as we do each year, to ensure every penny donated is used to make memories for those less fortunate.

Thank you, in advance, for your past support and continued generosity.
