Not friends yet: Real work will start once leadership changes

No one really expected that just a couple weeks after a contentious election that there would be sounds of "Kumbaya" coming out of the Capitol.

So it really was not that much of a surprise that a vote on the Keystone Pipeline project failed -- even if only by one vote.

Looks like there are not too many people willing to talk about bipartisanship yet.

Let's face it, there is not going to be much done over the next few weeks in Washington.

What you can expect is a continued battle over immigration policy between a lame duck Congress and a defiant President Barack Obama.

That is about all that will be on the agenda before the new crowd takes over.

And perhaps it is time for everyone to take a bit of a break from the bickering and start setting up for the new year.

There will be new leaders in place, new ideas to consider -- and perhaps the holidays will mellow everybody out so that in January everybody can get back to work.

But we wouldn't bet the house on it.
