Helping hands: Coordinated efforts could help local families

In the last couple of weeks, two local groups have organized efforts to feed the hungry.

And they are just two more of many organizations that make keeping food on local families' tables their goal.

All of these volunteers should be commended for deciding that the way to live a life of faith and service is to actually serve those who are in need. There is no better project than one that brings hope to others.

Perhaps the rest of us could help, too. Maybe there is a way to collect even more donations and to feed even more families.

What if there were a centralized service that kept track of who is getting food where -- and helped organize efforts in places where it is harder to find help?

It could be run by local churches, volunteers or both and it could fill a need that seems to be growing. It is also a way to offer other services, like consumer education and healthy eating tips.

It would be a wonderful feeling if we could say as a county that no one who needs help would have to go to bed without eating.

It certainly is a worthy goal.
