Library heroes: Don't forget who made Steele Memorial Library possible

There will be much hoopla over the opening of the new Steele Memorial Library in Mount Olive over the next few weeks.

There will be plenty of politicians and others eager to get their pictures taken and to take some credit for its construction.

But what needs to be noted as the festivities near is that this project started with a core group from a community determined to bring a new library to its borders.

Real people gathered together, raised a large amount of money and championed the cause. They ignored naysayers and dodged road blocks.

They did not let community leaders forget about their project -- and they made sure their fellow community members did not either.

And because of that dedication, Mount Olive will open a new library next month.

It's a perfect example of what a community can do if its members work together -- and a roadmap for others with similar dreams.
