Cancer fighters: Local event starts ball rolling on cancer research fundraisers

A weekend's worth of work, and now, $20,000 closer to a cure for cancer.

The annual St. Baldrick's event is a lot of fun for the audiences and the participants. Sponsors offer incentive for team members to shave off all their hair and facial hair to raise money for and in honor of those who are battling cancer.

It addresses the issue so well in so many ways -- by providing the money to put an end to cancer, and by acknowledging the tough road cancer patients face every day.

The event is supported in large part by the men of law enforcement and fire communities. So, if you see more than a few bald heads at fire and crime scenes, you will know why.

This is just one of the many events in this community that are rising up to the challenge to make a difference.

From the Cure for the Colors to the granddaddy of them all, Relay for Life, this community is constantly stepping up to fight cancer.

And if they continue, step by step, dollar by dollar, who knows, a cure might closer than we think.
